  • Contractor utilized steel sheet pile to punch through hard layers within the footprint of the sheet pile wall

September 23, 2022 Construction Phase
  • Contractor demolished and transported pier caps of existing bridge
  • Contractor began extracting existing concrete piles

Planned work:

  • Contractor will complete extraction of concrete piles. Some of the piles will break and will need to be cut below mudline elevation
  • Contractor will deliver new 24-inch concrete piles by barge
  • Contractor will construct pile-driving frame
  • Contractor has scheduled pile driving to begin by the end of the week on the west end of the project
September 16, 2022 Construction Phase
  • Contractor completed demolition and removal of existing bridge deck and beams
  • Contractor made improvements to temporary sidewalk
  • With demolition of the existing bridge deck completed, the navigational channel now has a higher overhead clearance

Next week:

  • Contractor will sawcut existing piles just below the pile caps and remove the existing pile caps
  • Contractor will begin extracting existing piles. The strength of the existing piles will determine how quickly this work will progress
  • Target date to complete demolition of existing bridge elements is Saturday, September 24
September 9, 2022 Construction Phase
  • Contractor relocated all equipment and material to the south side of the construction site.
  • Contractor installed temporary barrier wall, crash attenuators and striping for Phase II traffic pattern.
  • Contractor began coring and saw-cutting the existing bridge deck in preparation for demolition.
  • Contractor installed erosion control devices for Phase II construction.

Next week’s scheduled work:

  • Contractor will continue saw-cutting existing deck.
  • Contractor will begin removal of concrete deck slabs and transport them from construction site.
  • Contractor will begin substructure removal of existing bridge piers.
September 2, 2022 Construction Phase
  • Bridge is currently closed to traffic from 8/22/22 to 9/2/22
  • All Private and Public utility relocations to the new bridge segment have been completed
  • Contractor has completed roadway base construction for new traffic pattern onto new bridge segment
  • Contractor has completed installation of temporary asphalt for new traffic pattern onto new bridge segment
  • Contractor has completed pavement markings for new traffic pattern onto new bridge segment
  • Contractor has completed temporary sidewalk (concrete and asphalt) for pedestrian use of new bridge segment
  • Contractor has completed switching of maintenance of traffic devices from phase 1 to the phase 2 configuration
  • Removal of old utility lines on old bridge section has begun
  • The bridge will be reopened to traffic using the new bridge segment on 9/2/2022 – Please drive carefully
  • Concrete pours for Phase 2 structural units continue at off-site casting yards
  • Off-site testing of Phase 2 structural items continues

August 26, 2022 Construction Phase
  • Contractor has completed connection of new 16-inch reclaimed water main to the existing main and line is in service
  • Contractor continues to work on Phase I punch list items
  • Bridge is currently closed to traffic from 8/22/22 to 9/2/22 to allow completion of utility tie-ins located in the existing roadway and completion of new roadway construction
  • Private Utility Owners will have their relocation work located to the new bridge section completed this week
  • Contractor has begun roadway construction for the new bridge section connection.
    New Roadway Base construction will be completed this week
  • Concrete pours for Phase 2 structural units continue at off-site casting yards

August 12, 2022 Construction Phase FDEP has reviewed and approved the placing of the new 12-inch water main into service.
The new 12-inch water main final connections have been completed and it has been placed into service.
Contractor continues to work on the new 16-inch reclaimed water main in preparation of testing and placing it in service.
Connection of new 16-inch reclaimed water main to the existing main is anticipated to occur in 2 weeks.
Contractor continues to work on Phase I punch list items.
Roadway construction for upcoming traffic switch anticipated to begin in 2 weeks after utility tie-in work completed.
Bridge will be closed to traffic from 8/22/22 to 9/2/22 to allow completion of utility tie-ins located in the existing roadway and completion of new roadway construction.

August 5, 2022 Construction Phase Sanitation testing of 12-inch water line was completed. Documentation is being reviewed by FDEP, awaiting approval.
Contractor installed fittings on both ends of the bridge in preparation to connect new 16-inch reclaimed water line to the existing system. Contractor continues to work on the new 16-inch reclaimed water main on the bridge in preparation of testing and placing in service.

Contractor cleaned and prepared bridge deck for epoxy injection repair of superficial cracking.

July 22, 2022 Construction Phase TECO installed last 4 utility brackets and installed corresponding 4-inch gas line.

Contractor installed valve and tapping sleeve on new 12-inch water line west of the bridge.
Contractor installed expansion coupling, valve and blow-off on 12-inch water line east of the bridge.
July 15, 2022 Construction Phase Contractor installed additional floating turbidity barrier to contain runoff during summer storms.
Contractor received and installed modified utility hangers on the east end of the bridge.
TECO partially completed welding of 4-inch gas line and installed it across bridge on utility hangers.
Contractor installed 12-inch water pipe in realigned configuration on east end of the bridge.
Contractor coordinating with City of St. Petersburg Water Services and DEP for upcoming tests of new water line.
July 8, 2022 Construction Phase Contractor continues to work on structural elements for the 2nd phase of the project at offsite yards.
Contractor continues to maintain and adjust on site erosion control measures to control the runoff from recent storm events.
Contractor is preparing for remobilization of subcontractor crews to site to complete remaining work for Phase 1 of the project.

July 1, 2022 Construction Phase TECO installed 4-inch pipe for gas line relocation west of the bridge and will be starting installation of gas line on the west side of the bridge beginning next week.
Contractor painted water and reclaimed water pipe installed on the bridge.
Contractor constructed reinforcement cages for Phase II bridge piers and will continue to construct structural elements for south side of bridge in their casting yard.
Modified brackets for water and reclaimed water pipe are being completed and will be delivered next week.
June 24, 2022 Construction Phase Off-site fabrication and procurement of Phase 2 materials and structures continues.
Mobilization of crews and equipment to complete Phase 1 utility work has started.
Water and reclaimed water hangers are being modified for use in the revised utility alignment.
Contractor repaired surface deficiencies on the bridge and sidewalk.
June 17, 2022 Construction Phase The planned revision to resolve the utility conflict has been completed.
Raw materials for modified utility hangers are being procured.
June 10, 2022 Construction Phase The City and Project team are still working to resolve utility conflicts. The contractor continues to perform work offsite in preparation for the second phase. The City and the Project team are committed to the successful completion of this Project and are working hard to resolve the current issue and move the project to the next phase.
June 2, 2022 Construction Phase The City is working on resolving utility conflicts. Once completed, this will allow for the demolition of the south bridge. However, there are activities the contractor is actively performing offsite in preparation for the second phase. The City and the Project team are committed to the successful completion of this Project and once these issues are finalized, the team will be working to understand what, if any, impacts there are on the overall schedule and will be provided in a subsequent update.

May 14, 2021 Construction Phase The original road closure with flagmen was completed four days ahead of schedule on Wednesday May 12th. One of the two lanes on the bridge will be closed Monday, May 17th from 8:30am to Noon. Flaggers will direct traffic.
Phase I demolition is complete. The contractor will continue to install underdrain and reclaimed water pipe. For safety, pedestrians and bicyclists are prohibited on the bridge.
May 7, 2021 Construction Phase One of the two lanes on the bridge will be closed with flagmen to direct the traffic passing the bridge safely from Monday, May 10th to Friday, May 14th, 2021.

April 9, 2021 Construction Phase 40th Ave NE was closed near 11th St NE on 4/8 and morning of 4/9 for emergency sewer repairs unrelated to the bridge project.
Initial test pile program is nearly complete.
While additional piles are being made, contractor will be removing the existing piles from the water.
Expect occasional one lane road closures with flaggers in the next few weeks, as underground pipe crossings are installed.
April 2, 2021 Construction Phase Contractor continues bridge foundation construction.
Contractor continues installation of initial piles. Drainage construction resumes near 12th Street. For safety, pedestrian and bicycle traffic is restricted from the bridge.
March 26, 2021 Construction Phase Having completed the slab removal and preparation of the remaining bridge, the road is reopened to traffic on 26 March, 2021 but closed for pedestrian and bicyclist.
Contractor is now setting templates to drive the first three concrete piles for the new bridge, which will be analyzed to determine optimum pile length.
You may expect to notice some pile driving during the week of 29 March.
Additional demolition of the old bridge piers and piles will follow.
March 19, 2021 Construction Phase Utility companies have finished their removals.
Contractor’s crane is now working off a floating barge. Removal of the westbound deck slabs is complete, and temporary asphalt widening placed for the new traffic configuration. Progress is being made on demolition of the old bridge supports.
