User Safety
Safety will be the paramount focus of the replacement of the 40th Avenue NE Bridge. The design team is contemplating long-term safety improvements to the bridge as well as interim improvements and construction safety.
Long-term Safety
Some items under consideration include:
- Wider sidewalks
- ADA-compliant grades
- Dedicated bicycle lanes
- Crash-tested bridge railings
- Reduced speed limits
- Improved visibility at adjacent driveways
Interim Safety
- Structural repairs
- Reconfiguring alignment to allow pedestrians and bicyclists back on the bridge
Construction Safety
- Phased construction for the safety of vehicles, bicycles, pedestrians, and boaters
- Limiting all construction activities to safe work zone
- Minimizing loads and impacts on the existing bridge while the new bridge is under construction
